Public Eye

Under the Microscope

Given the challenge of dealing with complexities of crime, it is imperative that they find new ways of sharing resources and information more effectively with the communities. Public perception of the police thus becomes hugely important when judging the effectiveness of a police service.

At the scene of crime

The following figures give a break down of the major type of offences committed in Singapore as of 2003. Significantly crimes such as murder, rape etc are not specifically mentioned in the figure.

What do the Public think …

Findings from a 2003 public survey on the perception of Singaporeans on Public Safety and Security reveal that majority of the citizens are content with the efficiency of the Police Force. About 80 per cent of those surveyed felt that the county was a safe and secure place and 84 percent viewed Singapore as a country with law and order. The proportion reporting positive sentiments were higher for urban and educated males.

The majority (80 percent) perceived Singapore to be safer than most other countries. The factors contributing towards perceptions of greater security included 'greater police presence', 'safe to be alone at home' and 'no social disturbances'. It is significant to note that about 79 per cent of the female population interviewed felt that Singapore was safer than most other counties of the Asian Commonwealth.
